What does the six-month continuation mean?
Federal law requires a review at least 60 days before a TPS period ends. Section 1254a(b)(3)(C) provides a six-month continuation if DHS does not make the required determination that designation conditions are no longer met.
No timely contrary determination was identified in the official materials reviewed. On that basis, the statutory continuation supports April 19, 2027 as the next designation end date. This is a legal reading of the statute, not an April 2027 date newly announced by USCIS.
The absence of a public notice does not by itself establish whether DHS made an internal determination. The April date is therefore a qualified statutory analysis, subject to any later official guidance.
Who does this cover?
A country’s TPS designation and a person’s eligibility are different. The January 2025 extension covered qualifying existing beneficiaries and required re-registration. It did not create a new arrival cutoff. Individual filing history, eligibility, and USCIS decisions still matter. A pending application is not an approval.
Has new work-permit guidance issued?
Yes. The October 19 USCIS alert now expressly includes work authorization in the protection that Ukraine TPS holders retain pending an announcement. It does not give an April 19, 2027 expiration date for every EAD or replace the detailed Form I-9 documentation instructions.
The same page’s EAD section still describes qualifying A12/C19 cards used with a USCIS extension notice through October 19, 2026. The September 3 E-Verify bulletin also uses that date. We did not identify new Ukraine-specific instructions assigning all such cards an April 2027 validity date.
Continued permission to work and the documents used to prove it are related but separate questions. Review your card category, expiration date, USCIS notices, and the latest employer guidance before choosing a date for an employment-verification form.
What about automatic EAD renewals?
A separate DHS final rule took effect October 14, 2026. It retains the removal of renewal-filing-based automatic extensions for applications filed on or after October 30, 2025, while preserving specified extensions provided by law or TPS Federal Register notices. Do not assume that filing a renewal now gives everyone a 540-day extension. The rule itself does not announce an April 2027 Ukraine EAD date.
Frequently asked questions
Is April 19, 2027 a new DHS announcement?
No. It is the date supported by the six-month statutory continuation analysis above. The current USCIS alert gives continued protection pending an announcement.
Does this approve my pending TPS application?
No. USCIS must still decide your application. Keep your receipts and follow any instructions addressed to you.
Is my expired card automatically valid through April 2027?
Do not assume that date applies to your card. USCIS confirms continued work authorization for TPS holders in its alert, but the card-specific instructions reviewed still use October 19, 2026.
Does this extend my Uniting for Ukraine parole?
The Ukraine TPS alert addresses TPS. It does not announce an extension of your separate parole or a C11 card. Those records need their own review.
What can I do now?
Keep your TPS notices, EAD, renewal receipts, and recent USCIS messages together. Check the official Ukraine TPS page for changes. Bring your documents and your employment-verification questions to an individual consultation.
