Choose a safer way for a law office to contact you

If another person checks your phone, mail, email, location, or accounts, ordinary law-office messages may create risk. You do not need to describe abuse or enter private information on this page. Use this guide to think about a contact plan before completing an intake form.

The quick-exit button replaces this page with a neutral weather website, but it cannot erase browser history, downloads, autofill, synced tabs, router records, or monitoring software. If it is safe, use a device and account the other person cannot access. Private browsing reduces some local history but does not make activity invisible.

Make a simple contact plan

  1. Phone

    Decide whether calls, voicemail, or text are safe. Consider a neutral contact name and whether a detailed voicemail could be heard by someone else. Tell staff what words may or may not be used.

  2. Email

    Use an account with a password the other person does not know and two-step verification on a safe device. Check recovery email, forwarding rules, shared cloud accounts, and notification previews.

  3. Mail

    Choose an address where the other person cannot intercept legal mail. A trusted person's address may help only with permission and reliable delivery. Do not assume a general address change updates every agency or court.

  4. Appointments

    Ask how reminders appear and whether interpretation or disability accommodations are needed. Arrange a safe time and place for calls; do not join a confidential meeting while someone unsafe can hear.

  5. Documents

    Ask for a secure upload method before sending identity, medical, police, court, or abuse-related records. Remove unsafe shared access, but do not destroy original evidence or alter a document.

What you can tell the intake specialist without giving your legal story

  • Which channel is safest: call, text, WhatsApp, email, or mail
  • Safe days and times
  • Whether voicemail is allowed and what neutral words may be used
  • Whether messages should avoid the firm's name or the word immigration
  • Whether an unsafe person controls your phone plan, email, address, or transportation
  • Whether there is an immediate deadline or safety emergency

Safer mail checklist

  • List every agency, court, lawyer, and benefits office that may send mail.
  • Use a complete address and confirm whose name may appear on the envelope.
  • Ask a trusted recipient not to photograph or forward documents through an unsafe account.
  • Check mail consistently and preserve envelopes showing mailing or delivery dates.
  • Tell counsel before moving again; no address is safe forever if access changes.

VAWA, T visa, and U visa correspondence

USCIS has confidentiality protections and special procedures affecting certain VAWA self-petitioners and applicants for T or U nonimmigrant status. Address and contact changes for protected filings may require a specific USCIS process; a normal online address change may not update every protected case. Court, ICE, consular, state-court, and lawyer records are separate. Before changing an address or filing online, identify every pending matter and ask counsel which agency must receive the change.
